OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS Thank you for purchasing a TH 55 CL. We recommend that these instructions are closely followed in order to operate the engine without risk to yourself or any other person present during the practising of our sport. 1 – Do not fly your model before checking thoroughly that the motor is correctly and securely bolted to the airframe. Only use high quality tempered steel nuts and bolts for this purpose. NEVER USE A VICE, CLAMPS, MOLE GRIPS OR ANY OTHER FIXING METHOD TO SECURE YOUR MOTOR FOR RUNNING. 2 – The use of a ‘Chicken Finger’ or electric starter is recommended to prevent any injuries on hands and fingers during starting. DO NOT START THE MOTOR with BARE FINGERS. 3- Always keep your hands at a safe distance from the propeller when adjusting the carburettor and/ or disconnecting the starter battery clip. 4 – For a QUICK STOP of the motor, just obstruct the fuel flow from tank to carburettor or to remove the fuel line from the engine. NEVER THROW A RAG OR SIMILAR OBJECT AT THE PROPELLER, TO STOP THE ENGINE. 5- WARNING: If Engine`s handling is NOT perform properly serious injuries may occur due to the its high rotational speed. So every precaution must be taken in order to protect any part of your face or body from the propeller. 6 – The use of SAFETY GLASSES is highly recommended when operating the motor. KEEP propeller`s surrounding areas FREE of any loose object that could be drawn towards the engine. 7 – BE AWARE that highly toxic gases that can damage your health are exhausted from the engine during the starting process, so it is highly recommended to avoid operating the motor in NON -VENTILATED areas. 8 – ALWAYS use clean & high quality fuel in order to avoid damaging the motor, shortening its LIFE SPAN.. 9 – Fuel MUST be STORED in tin cans or suitable plastic containers, never USE GLASS containers. KEEP FUEL containers in a cool, dark or with little illumination place. 10 – Always operate the engine with the silencer provided. 11 – TH 55 CL engines are a high quality engineering product therefore must be treated as such. 12 – If in doubt of any aspect of the engines operation or use, contact www.technohobbies.net, for proper advice or talk to an experienced and knowledgeable modeller. REMEMBER: THE PROPER AND SAFE OPERATION OF YOUR ENGINE AND MODEL IS ENTIRELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. With care and good sense you will enjoy for years the good handling qualities of your engine without the need for technical service. Using your judgement and skills, no prior detailed technical knowledge is necessary. These operating instructions have been written for a wide range of aeromodellers form BEGINNERS to EXPERTS. So even for certain clients some details may appear elemental, they will be of great help for those who are just starting in our sport. STARTING PROCEEDURE 1 – Running – in 1.a. – Mounting: Using high quality bolts, securely fixed your engine to a test stand or table, to avoid any excessive vibration or movement.. Fit the silencer with the gasket spring washers and bolts provided. We recommend the use of a high temperature sealant for fitting the silencer. Do not over-tighten the silencer securing bolts. 1.b. – Propellers: We recommend the use of good quality propellers of suitable size for the engine. Propellers should always be balanced before use. Fit it to the engine and properly tighten using a suitable tool so that the prop nut is not damaged. The following chart shows recommended propeller sizes: TH 55 CL SIZE Min. RPM Max. RPM Running-in 47 CL 10-6/10-7 3,800 5,800-6,200 Normal flying 47 CL 11-5/11-6 2,800 10,400-10.600 Running-in 55 CL 11-5/11-6 3,800 5,800-6,200 Normal flying 55 CL 11-6/11-7 2,800 10,600-10.800 1.c. – Venturi adjustment The TH 55 CL venturi has been manufactured to obtain the best results, however the its performance may vary depending on weather conditions and FUEL type that has been used. The TH 55 CL venturi has one adjustments to achieve correct engine operation. • The speed needle is require to regulate the main fuel flow through the engine and is part of the carburettor spray bar assembly. Modifying its position will change the mixture (air/fuel) that enters the engine. FIRST START The speed needle should be set INITIALLY at ¼ open. Connect the glow plug battery. Sharply flick the propeller in an anti-clockwise direction using a ‘chicken finger’ (200 mm. long ) or an electric starter. During the running-in period we recommend not exceeding 6,000 rpm, always keeping a ‘rich’ mixture, in order to ensure proper lubrication to all parts of the engine. The first start should not exceed 5 minutes, after this first running stop the engine, let it cool down and repeat the operation for another five minutes run. Following this, run the engine for ten minutes, (approx. half a 360 cc. tank), stop and again allow to cool it down. Finally start the engine again and let it run until empty the (360 cc.) tank, keeping the needle set to ensure that engine`s RPM NEVER exceed the 6500 mark. For the second tank of fuel, the engine can be run for short periods of 10 to 15 seconds at 10,000 rpm, immediately after this speed needle should be turn anti-clockwise in order to reduce the engine`s speed until a reliable 2800 – 3200 rpm is achieved (ralenty speed operation). AFTER RUN-IN PERIOD 2. – Care and Maintenance: a) Other recommendations: Always maintain all parts of your engine clean, paying special attention to the carburettor. After use, when the engine will be out of use until the following flying session, we recommend the use of a ‘after-run’ oil (TH after-run). Six or seven drops to be put down to the open carburettor throat, after which the engine is turned-over five or six times to distribute the oil through-out the engine internal parts. b) The Snorer after-run oil has been formulated to avoid the formation of ‘laquer’ that obstructs oil lubrication holes and coats ball bearings. Acting as a water repellent it avoids rust formation, the number one enemy of any internal combustion engine. c) Always use a fuel of proven quality that contains 18 to 20% castor oil by volume. The percentage of nitro methane used should not exceed 5% by volume. d) Check that the glow plug is in good working condition. e) Ensure that the propeller used is of a suitable size, it is balanced and in good condition without chips or cracks. NEVER USED a damaged propeller under any circunstances. f) Check the OUTPUT VOLTAGE of the BATTERY that IGNITE the glow plug is the correct one (1,2 Volts) otherwise damage of the PLUG may occur. g) Maintain the outside of your engine clean and dry. h) Always ensure that your engine is properly secured to the model engines bearers, or mount, with no vibration and correctly aligned according to the model instructions. i) Use your TH 55 CL motor in models of a suitable size to match the power output available. Under each engine mounting lug a letter and number will be found, that correspond to the date of manufacture, sale and complete customers details. This way we can follow-up with any necessary after sales technical service and assure the quality of a correctly operated motor.
